Although, that was not a recommended career....but I have always played matchmaker. I do believe that everyone deserves to find love. Maybe I just feel that if all my friends have a happy ending..so will I? This weekend is Valentine’s Day...the most hated say by singles and the best day for chocolate makers and florists. I have organised a matchmaking single in the city Valentine’s day party. I’ve invited my fabulous single friends and asked them to invite their single friends and so on....I thought no one would come..but now we are almost sold out! 100 people have RSVP. This thing went viral on facebook. Let the matchmaking begin. The weird thing is I do not know half the people coming. I’m cupid on the day. Everyone will get little pieces of paper in the shape of a heart where they can write their name/phone number and gaydar profile. They can then give their hearts away to people they like...or they can ask cupid (me!) to pass on the message??? Most of the guys are genuine looking for love...or at least a meet! So it should be interesting....alcohol and a hot Sunday evening...no one wants to be lonely on valentine’s day.

They say those who cannot love…match…so I’m happy with that. I’m not sure if there will be long term relationships, but there were definitely connections. My cue was when two guys stated making out. I thought..cupid’s job is done. I went out with friends for dinner…after my matchmaking shift! My community service was done for the nigh! The weekend was all about love…but more talk than action. Love…a little word with lots of meanings. Wars have been fought over it, people commit suicide because they lack it…and everyone wants it. You cannot buy it..but once you have it you feel like the luckiest person. And when it is gone, you can sink into depressions. But when do you tell your significant others? A few months ago, it seemed many of my friends were breaking up. Now, it seems everyone is falling in love again. I caught up with a power brunch with my friend Claire. She had been happily seeing S for over three months. She was trying to sort out if she should tell him she loved him over V day. Had it been long enough? Would the L word change things..she wondered. Men can be scared by the L word. Claire was actually hoping that S would say it first. But S was a true bloke..he’d wine and dine her for V day but it would take a lot for him to express his feelings. Claire wanted him to say it first…even though she had been feeling it for weeks.

I wondered…why did saying “I love you” have such a profound effect on relationships? When you fall in love you want to shout it from the rooftops, but when it comes to telling the person you are in love with, it becomes complicated. Mark was having the opposite problem. His new boyfriend had said the L word a month after they met on manhunt. Mark believed it was not love but a serious infatuation…brought upon by hot sex over a number of weeks. He wondered if his new bf was saying the L word in an attempt to extend a physical relationship and develop into something more. Feeling it is more important then saying it…although for me both are required for a successful relationship. They were the standardised test type very common in American education...fill in the boxes type with a #2 pencil. I always scored very low in areas of mathematics, science, and physics. Careers not for me: Architecture, Science, Engineering...anything that involves math. What I did score high on was on “people skills” and communication. Careers I should consider: nurse, teacher and matchmaker!

Another Valentine’s day passed. The singles party was a total success…everyone it seems was looking for love on V day or at least a quick hook up. Over 80 people tuned out. If I had charged a higher cover, I could have made some money. I could not help but wonder this could be my new career or at least a part time job…part time matchmaker. There was something good about trying to play cupid. I was not looking for me but looking for my friends…there’s less pressure and it’s more fun.
